In 1905, the call for a mass meeting in Mexico, Missouri, read:
“We the undersigned citizens, deeming it necessary for
the safety of your families and believing that the automobile
is a menace to the lives of our people and of prosecuting
of our callings, do hereby give public notice that there
will be a mass meeting held in Mexico (the county seat),
Missouri, at the court house on Saturday, September 23, 1905,
at 2 o’clock p.m to consult as to the best means if controlling
this evil.”
At the meeting, one suggestion was that “those who were determined to operate the nuisance build themselves private roads and stay on them.”
